As an Academy we have developed a new and exciting curriculum for all our schools. The Government bought out a new National Curriculum in September 2014 and this gave us the opportunity to develop a rich Academy Curriculum to engage our children.

We use the National Curriculum as it stands in English, Maths and Science, as these are tested nationally and we would be doing our children a large disservice if we strayed too far away from these National guidelines.

Currently the statutory national assessments are conducted in YrR, Yr1, Yr2 and Yr6. 

Yr R are assessed on entry to school, generating a baseline for all children. 

YR1 pupils complete Phonic Screening assessments. 

The next statutory national assessment is in Yr 2 where the children complete KS1 SATs (standardised assessment tests).  These are in English (reading, writing, grammar, punctuation and spelling), and maths (arithmetic and reasoning), during May.

 Yr 6 complete the KS2 SATs in May, also in English (reading, writing, grammar, punctuation and spelling), and maths (arithmetic and reasoning) generating their final assessments as they leave primary education.  

To ensure all children’s progress is tracked with rigour, we assess every child 6 times a year.  We use summative assessment and professional judgement, based on the standards set by the National Curriculum, to monitor the progress of every child.  Through this we assure that all the children have the opportunity to achieve the highest standards possible in English and maths. 

The rest of the curriculum has been developed in some detail. Using the expectations and skills identified in the 2014 National Curriculum, Dymchurch Primary School’s curriculum has been designed to engage children and ensure that the essential skills are developed appropriately throughout their primary school career. 

We aim to continue developing our ‘additional curriculum’. These are the extras that we include in your child’s learning experience throughout their time in school. Whether it be philosophy, first aid, finance, instruments, life skills - it is aimed to give our pupils the opportunity to engage in additional learning experiences they may not otherwise be able to access.

You will receive reports three times a year on your child’s progress.  At the end of Term 2 and 4 you will receive a short report identifying the levels that your child is achieving and a short comment on their progress and well-being.  In July you will receive a longer report in the form of a letter, identifying the strengths your child has shown during the year, their levels and points to develop further. 

If, during the year, concerns arise we will of course contact parents or carers immediately.  It is essential that we are informed as soon as possible, should there be concerns from home in any form.
