Year 6 - Canada
Today we were extremely lucky to have a chef come in from 'Roots to Food'. The children had the opportunity to work in teams to create a dish from healthy ingredients. Throughout this session the children participated in a variety of cooking methods. For example, cutting/chopping, mixing, squeezing, stir frying and steaming. They also had the chance to discuss the different ingredients on offer and how these related to the different food groups. From this they then discussed the importance of these food groups for a healthy, balanced diet. Here are some pictures:
This week has been Maths week and Year 6 have taken part in a variety of mathematical tasks throughout the week.
In Topic, the children were investigating rationing, during WW2, using their knowledge of the 4 operations. They had to work out how much it would cost for a family of 4. They also had to convert into old money.
In PE, the children were working together in teams to create numbers, symbols and number sentences. Can you tell what we are representing?
We have also been learning how to say numbers in French and put them into sentences.
As well as all of this, the children have also taken part in a Maths trail outside, Who wants to be a Mathionaire, Are you smarter than a 10 year old (against the teachers), created mazes and sang Maths songs in assembly.
Year 6 have just finished an amazing week full of lots of activities around the theme of Electricity. Here is what they got up to.
First, the children discussed and investigated what unit of measurement we use for electricity. They then matched appliances from around the home to how many watts they thought it would be.
Next, the children created some brilliant non-chronological reports on the influential scientist, Allessandro Volta (the man who discovered the battery).
After that, they discovered circuits are drawn using symbols. Before they had a go at making and drawing their own circuits, they matched real life pictures of the circuit with the definition and then the symbol. They did a great job!
Then, they moved on to conducting their own investigation into the following question, ' How will the number of batteries affect the brightness of the bulb?'. In this experiment that had the opportunity to predict, gather equipment, discuss variables (elements they would change and keep the same), design how they would record the results, complete the investigation and summarise their findings. As a class, we decided to test 5 batteries with one bulb. Ask your children to tell you what they had found out during this experiment.
Continuing on from the experiment, Year 6 gathered in the hall to demonstrate what they had found using drama. We used yellow bibs to represent bulbs and blue bibs to represent batteries. Through this, the more kinaesthetic learners were able to understand what the experiment was showing us.
At the end of the week, the class were given the opportunity to design and create an electrical scarecrow using a variety of materials. They then had a go at attaching it to a motor in the circuit. To their enjoyment, the scarecrows started spinning around. It was brilliant! From this, they then wrote some amazing instructions using structural features, imperative verbs, time words, adjectives and adverbs. Some were even using parenthesis and semi colons.
Last week it was Enterprise week. This gave Year 6 the chance to discuss and use terms like profit and loss, budgets and marketing.
The children had lots of fun creating their own theme park from scratch. First they planned their theme park using squared paper. Each square was a certain measurement and each ride had a certain area. They had to be methodical and precise with their space to ensure they didn't waste any or use too much of their 5 million budget they were given. As you can see, Year 6 used some of their previous and newly learnt mathematical vocabulary within this task. They then moved on to looking at their budget in more detail and their running costs for their theme park.
As well as their theme parks, Year 6 also applied their business knowledge when making their Christmas crafts for the Christmas Fayre. Once made, we decided as a class what price we should cost the crafts at. we took into consideration how much it cost to buy all the resources and how much profit we would make. This week has been an excellent week where the children have applied their previous and newly learnt learning to different activities and tasks.

This week it has been Science week. In our Animals including humans Topic we have been looking at the Circulatory system. The children have learnt about the functions of the heart and blood and how blood travels around the body. They've had fun demonstrating this with bean bags and drawing and labeling diagrams. The class have also been able to hold and dissect a sheep heart. Some children were able to name some of the parts of the heart. We are currently in the process of making 'being healthy' posters and understanding the effect certain things have on our bodies.
North and South America
Pick a country in either North or South America and create a poster that demonstrates and highlights the physical geography of that country.
Here are some physical features you could look at:
· Costal Landscapes
· Rock landscapes
· Natural hazards
· Rivers and water.
Present it as a poster using features such as diagrams/pictures, arrows and boxes.
WW1 – Task One
As you know all around England we have memorials that we use to remember the brave soldiers that risked their lives for us in both World Wars. If you could re-design a War memorial, what would it look like? I would like you to sketch your ideas on a piece of paper using a sharp pencil. Remember what we learnt about shading and use your pencil in different ways. Keep it black and white.
You could produce one or lots of smaller ideas but keep it to one piece of paper.
You might want to wait until we have completed some Topic lessons before you have a go.
Our DT topic this term is Food.
For this particular section of your homework, I would like you to design some rules titled ‘Table manners’.
· What are they?
· What do we have to do?
· When do we use them?
· How should I present this?
Use these questions to create something that will inform other adults and children what table manners are, when we use them and why. What you create and how you create it is up to you. You could create a poster but try and be more creative and think outside the box.
WW1 – Task Two
For your second Topic task, I would like you to have a go at making a board game with the theme of WW1. I would like you to use the facts you learn in our Topic lessons and turn it into a game. You can make your game 3D or it can be 2D (on paper). It could even be a game using ICT.
What you use and how you use it is up to you. You might want to wait until Topic week or you could do some research youself.
Here is an example if you need some inspiration:
In Science this term, we are looking at where we came from and the process of evolution and inheritance. I would like you to create a family tree. How you do this is up to you. This can be 2D or 3D. How much information you include is up to you. It can be just your immediate family or if you wish you could go back further. Be creative.
Here is an idea.
This is up to you. What excites you about the world we live in? Is there something about you and your family you would like to share? Is there an object that is special to you which you would like to talk about? You could bring something in.
You could find out about something in the news and write your own article about it.
You could produce a piece of art, make a model or sculpture.
If you are bringing something in please write a short piece of writing telling us all about it.
The possibilities are endless. Just make it different to a free choice you have brought in before.
The choice is yours!
