Year 5 - Chile
Roots to Food
The children got be real chefs for the morning! We made a dish from scratch, using simple but delicious ingredients.
The children made orange infused meatballs and prepped the vegetables for a chow mein, before creating a delicious stir fry!
Hopefully the children will now feel empowered to try cooking this dish at home for the family!
We have been learning about multiplication and statistics in maths.
The children have been learning which table or graph is most appropriate for different sets of data as well as collecting their own data through PE.
We also took part in a maths trail and maths/PE circuit using our multiplication, division, factors, multiples and rounding skills.
We have been looking at the text, Wolf Brother, and using descriptive writing to predict the next part of the story. We used drama to show the characters' emotions as well as thinking about different uses of speech.
In PE we have been learning different gymnastics skills such as: jumping, travelling, counter balancing and different types of rolls, which we will be putting in to a sequence next week. Year 5 have also been learning how to play volleyball and have been applying these skills to the Inter-House Volleyball competition.
This week was all about Maths!
We used Maths in all our learning throughout the week, and even took part in special maths quizzes during assemblies.
Maths PE circuit
We tallied up our scores, multiplied them using our 6 - 12 times tables, then determined how many factors the product had and whether it was a prime or composite number.
We had to find clues that had been hidden all over the KS1 & KS2 playground and use our problem solving skills to find the answer, which gave us a letter to a maths anagram!
Term 2 was an incredibly busy term for Year 5! We learnt about forces, biomes, basketball, figurative language, persuasive writing, data & statistics, Sonia Delaunay's artwork in our curriculum.
We also made gingerbread houses for the Christmas Fayre, explored forces in science, sang carol at the Old Rectory, took at trip on the RHDR to New Romney and performed a carol concert in St Nicholas' Church & performed our Christmas play, The Magic Jigsaw, at St Paul & St Peter's Church.
The children have been learning about data and statistics in maths. We have been collecting and presenting our own data and discussing the best way to present it. We found that our PE circuit needed to be presented in a table as there were too many units of measure to present it in a graph.
DT & Maths
We worked in pairs to design our houses, using many maths and DT skills over the two days.
We developed our skills further in basketball, with some of the class going on to represent the school at the Shepway Sports Trust & School Games basketball tournaments, taking 1st, 2nd & 3rd place across the two events.
We have been learning Christmas songs with Danny from Kent Music since Term 1 and this term we took a trip on the RHDR (picking us up from the school field) and went to St Nicholas' Church in New Romney, where the children performed a carol concert to the Mayor and their parents along with Greatstone school.
In science we explored different forces and how they influence how we live our lives. We tested streamline shapes, air resistance (with parachutes) and forces in everyday activities such as running, jumping, basketball and hockey.

Our Potter Poems using figurative language. Which metaphors and similes have been used most effectively?
A fabulous workshop based on Ancient Greece from Living History Workshops:
The class had a wonderful day, acting out the life of an Athenian or Spartan for the day and produced some wonderful writing in the first person the next day.
Welcome to Year 5!
In history, we have been learning about Ancient Greece and how the Greeks influenced modern society.
We learnt about the two main city states, Sparta and Athens, and the differences between the two states. We have also found out the different roles of men and women in society during ancient greek times and the difference in roles for women in Sparta and Athens.

As part of our homework challenge, Dan, Halime, Ruby and Sam made Greek bread and honey cake as one of their courses for their Greek menu.
The bread was delicious with dips, and the cake was very sweet!
In maths we have been learning about place value including 6 digit numbers and rounding to 100,000.
We also used our multiplication knowledge in a PE circuit. We tallied up our points, then multiplied it by either 4, 6, 7, 8 or 9 to find the total points for that station - it was great fun!
This week we have been learning about Earth and Space - it's been out of this world!

Recording shadows and angles at different times of the day.
Creating phases of the moon
In PE we have been learning how to play the invasion game netball. We have been practising our different passes including: bounce pass, shoulder pass and chest pass. We have also had to learn how to pivot so that we can pass the ball to our team mates.
